Good water = good coffee
Coffee is 98% water, which means the taste of your water has a major effect on the taste of your coffee! Make sure you have a solid foundation in order to craft your best brew. We recommend using filtered tap water or bottled spring water for the best results. Some folks ask us about using Reverse Osmosis water, which we do not recommend.
Right down the middle
For an automatic brewer, use a medium grind – grounds should look slightly coarser than sand. If you like your morning routine short and sweet, our pre-ground coffee is the perfect grind for automatic brewers. But if you don’t mind taking a little extra care in the morning, you’ll find that grinding your beans immediately before brewing gives you a vibrant, extra-fresh cup.
The perfect mix
Officially, there’s only one right way to brew the perfect cup, and that’s by weighing out exact amounts of coffee and water. Unofficially? We know that you can master a delicious cup of coffee with the tools already at your disposal. We recommend starting with a ratio of 2 tbsp coffee for every 6 ounces of water. From there, adjust the amount of coffee up or down depending on your tastes. Everyone likes their coffee a little different – play around with it!
Put all your elements together and let the brewer take control! Because you’re putting all your faith in a machine to brew your coffee, it’s important to make sure your brewer checks these boxes:
1) You want a brewer that evenly dispenses water over the coffee grounds. If your brewer only drips water in the center of the filter basket, it will over-extract the grounds in the center (making them bitter), while the grounds on the outside are under-extracted (making them sour).
2) The brewer should heat the water to a temperature between 195-205 degrees Fahrenheit – hotter or cooler temperatures will throw off the taste of your coffee.
