Maritza Headshot

Coffee Kids Partnership: Chapter Two in Maritza’s Story

We’re so grateful for the opportunity to support the next generation of coffee farmers through our partnership with Coffee Kids. This year, we’ve focused our donation efforts on supporting Maritza, a 19-year-old female coffee farmer from the Trifinio region of Central America. Although only being involved in Coffee Kids for less than two years, Maritza and her siblings have accomplished some incredible things – including launching their very own coffee brand. We wanted to share a closer look into the resources, support and opportunities that made this possible.

If this is your first time learning about Maritza, we recommend starting with the posts below:

Introducing This Year’s Coffee Kids Partner, Maritza!

Coffee Kids Partnership: The First Chapter in Maritza’s Story

Shortly after Maritza became involved in the UNIOCAFE youth committee (local farmer organization that has partnered with Coffee Kids in the Trifinio region) she became immersed in entrepreneurial trainings, workshops and mentorship programs. This programming not only taught her the technical skills needed for growing and selling coffee, but also personal development skills such as public speaking and teamwork.

Prior to becoming involved in UNIOCAFE, Maritzia struggled voicing her opinions and putting herself out there. The biggest catalyst for overcoming that fear was the support she received from fellow program youth, as well as her family and friends. In fact, that support has been the biggest surprise to Maritza throughout the entire process.

As a young woman in the Trifinio region, opportunities to become involved in the coffee industry were slim. Prior to joining the project, Maritza didn’t know what to expect, as she had never been allowed to learn about coffee in the past or get involved in the process. Coffee Kids has helped to turn that around.

In an interview with Maritza, she said, “It’s been a really great experience because as a woman, I’ve been able to be really involved in the whole process – from de-pulping, to packaging, to sales. I’ve been involved in everything and the process is really awesome.”

Over the course of her time with Coffee Kids, Maritza has noticed a positive shift in the region for other young women becoming involved in the coffee value chain as well. Many of them may not have seen this as an option in the past, but have become inspired by seeing their peers’ involvement. Maritza believes that this support will only continue to grow over time.
