Functional coffee is in!

Learn how to boost your brews at home

The season of transitions and transformations is here! Functional coffees—infused with protein, mushrooms and adaptogens—have been trending for a while, marketed as healthier and more productive alternatives to a regular cup. But the truth is, plain coffee already offers plenty of health benefits. According to the Minnesota-based Mayo Clinic, studies link coffee to a reduced risk of certain cancers, chronic liver and kidney diseases and neurodegenerative conditions like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. It's even associated with a lower risk of depression—not surprising since coffee is our daily dose of sunshine!

In short, your morning mug already boosts mood, energy and long-term health. But if you want to take it up a notch, you don't need to splurge on expensive blends. You can make your coffee even more functional at home with simple (and budget-friendly) hacks that won't sacrifice flavor. Are you ready to level up your brews?

The Protein Coffee Mix-Up

This basic coffee and protein shake will deliver flavor and energy in less than 10 minutes! This recipe requires zero blender, just a shake bottle and a few ingredients!

Ingredients:

  • One cup of cooled brewed coffee—we recommend an unflavored medium or dark-roast blend, like Donut Shop or French Roast.

  • One scoop of protein powder — try a vanilla or chocolate-flavored powder to mimic the flavor of coffee creamers.

  • ½ cup milk or milk alternative

  • Ice (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Add all ingredients to a shaker bottle.

  2. Seal tightly and shake intensely for 20–30 seconds until smooth.

  3. Enjoy! Add ice to make it extra chill.

Mushroom Powder + Coffee

What's the deal with mushrooms? Certain varieties are packed with vitamins and minerals and have been shown to reduce fatigue, improve gut health and boost your immune system. In fact, popular supplements you may have been taking for years—like Reishi or Lion's Mane—are actually mushrooms! The good news? You don't need to drink mushroom coffee to enjoy these benefits. Just add a little mushroom powder to your home-brewed coffee or incorporate more mushrooms into your cooking. Here's our recommended formula for mushroom powder and coffee!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of hot brewed coffee — again, a medium or dark roast like Donut Shop or French Roast is best for this.

  • ½ to 1 tsp of mushroom powder — any mushroom mix you prefer works here!

  • Optional: Coffee creamer or milk

Instructions:

  1. Brew your coffee as usual.

  2. Add the mushroom powder to the hot coffee.

  3. Stir until the powder is fully dissolved

  4. Taste! If the flavor is a little earthy, add a splash of milk or sweetener

  5. Drink and enjoy!

Other Add-ons and Adaptogens

You can add just about anything to your coffee—within reason, of course. Cacao powder, made from raw cacao beans, is rich in flavonoids and antioxidants has been linked to lower blood pressure and reduced inflammation and it tastes great in coffee. Collagen powder mixes easily into any home brew. Got ashwagandha drops? Add a few to your mug and go about your day.

You can get more creative by gathering your favorite ingredients and creating functional lattes at home with additives that actually make you feel good. Creating your own blends lets you determine what your body needs and how those ingredients can fit into your whole diet, not just your morning mug. Understanding what works for you supports a more intentional, holistic wellness lifestyle and helps you avoid overspending on supplements and blends you might not need.
